Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to the industrial manufacturing of shoes.
- It is known that shoes called "moccasin" or anyway made for sports or leasure time, generally of soft leather, comprise a lower part, called vamp, with open or closed bottom (as in the case of the tubular moccasin), an upper closing element called toe cap (or patch), other finishing elements to strengthen, close the vamp at the rear, etc., and a sole, e.g. of flexible type.
- One of the known operating processes for the industrial manufacture of said shoes is presently articulated according to the phases briefly described hereinafter.
- The sole, the vamp, the toe cap and the other finishing elements of the shoe are made first. Subsequently, the rear part of the vamp is closed and seamed, while the front part of the vamp is shaped and folded upwards and the toe cap is seamed to it.
- By means of a last, inserted in the vamp, to the bottom of this latter is fastened a pre-sole, for lower closing of the vamp in the case of an open moccasin.
- The lower external surface of the pre-sole, or of the vamp in the case of a tubular moccasin, which has to be subsequently fastened by glueing to the upper surface of the sole, is then scraped, by means of emery cloth, in order to make it rough and optimize the setting of glue on it.
- This last step, for reasons which are obvious to the experts in the field, requires to be carried out by skilled labour, since the area concerned must necessarily coincide with the area ideally defined on the vamp by the corresponding perimeter of the sole.
- Subsequently, a layer of glue is applied on the scraped surface of the vamp, or of the pre-sole, which is then disposed adherent to the upper surface of the sole, which is made e.g. of rubber or other synthetic resin, while at the same time exerting a predetermined pressure to allow a good setting of the glue.
- Finally, after glue has dried, the last is removed from the vamp and the shoe undergoes finishing-off operations, e.g. the seaming of further ornamental parts to the vamp. Otherwise, the sole border is then seamed to the vamp to fix the fastening among the elements of the shoe.
- The glueing of the pre-sole, with the vamp fastened to the same, or of the same vamp to the sole, requires a number of operating steps which have a negative impact on the global manufacturing cost of shoes.
- As a matter of fact, it is necessary to apply glue on the upper surface of the sole first, and then on the outer surface of the pre-sole.
- When such a kind of glue is used, which requires heating to be activated, both the sole and the pre-sole, with the vamp fastened to it, must be kept for a predetermined time in an oven.
- The use of glues requires sophisticated equipment specially designed for the purpose, and long working times, mainly due to the wait for the activation of glue and for the subsequent drying.
- Furthermore, the above-mentioned steps can hardly be automated, particularly the vamp-scraping one, and they require a massive employment of skilled labour.
- Finally, after the provisional fastening has been carried out through the glue, the sole and the vamp cannot be easily detached any more.
- That is to say that another negative feature of the process described above is irreversibility.
- All what has been said above has a negative impact on the manufacturing cost of shoes, which instead needs to be kept as low as possible, without affecting product quality.
- The object of the present invention is to provide a method to manufacture sports-shoes which, by virtue of a simple and inexpensive technical solution, consists of a series of phases less complicated than that of the method referred to above, so bringing about a remarkable improvement of productivity both from the point of view of times and of costs involved.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a method in which every step is not irreversible.
- The above-mentioned objects are achieved through a method for manufacturing shoes comprising a vamp and a sole designed to be joined to the vamp firstly, through a mutual temporary fastening, and subsequently by seaming its border to the vamp, this metho being substantially performed as described hereinafter and claimed in the appended Claims.
- This method can be applied also to the process for obtaining shoes comprising a vamp, a pre-sole and a sole, which has to be joined to the vamp.
- The advantages obtained by using the present method may be summarized as follows:
- Quick execution of the joining phase of sole and vamp.
The fastening between these elements is performed safely and quickly by means of a first temporary jointing of the vamp, and the sole obtained through a strip integral with the vamp, then followed by the definitive jointing by seaming of the sole and the vamp.
Thus the phases of application of glue on the upper surface of the sole and on the pre-sole are eliminated, as well as the need to pass sole and vamp in the oven.
Furthermore, the need to put the elements, composing the shoe, under pressure for a predetermined time is eliminated.
All this involves a substantial reduction of shoe manufacturing costs.
By adopting the method proposed by the present invention, all the phases of vamp pre-assembling are eliminated, which are usually carried out by means of sophisticated machinery and lasts of various forms and sizes.
The resulting advantages are self-evident to the experts in the field. - Practicality in the execution of the fastening phase of the vamp to the sole.
The joining of the two parts, both in the basic forms and in the different embodiments as described above, is obtained in a simple way without requiring sophisticated machinery to apply glue or high temperatures to activate the same glue.
After having been joined, sole and vamp are ready for the subsequent phases of shoe working.
Furthermore, the joining between sole and vamp is not irreversible, as in the case of glueing.
Thus vamp and sole may still be disjoined before the definitive seaming. - Safety.
The use of glues, very often toxic, is avoided, in the joining phase of the vamp to the sole. - Economy.
The above-mentioned advantages result, directly or indirectly, in a remarkable reduction of the global manufacturing cost of shoes.
Furthermore, since for the efficient and optimal execution of the present method it is necessary to use vamps of the open type, this brings about remarkable savings in leather or other materials used to make the vamp. - The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
- Fig. 1 is a view of a vamp and a sole made in accordance with the present invention;
- Figs. 2a,2b,2c,2d,2e,2f,2g,2h,2i,2j, are sectional views of a detail of the jointing between vamp and sole, in various embodiments;
- Figs. 3 and 3a are sectional views respectively of an improvement of the method and of a detail of the jointing between vamp and sole made in accordance with the improvement.
- With reference to the above-mentioned drawings, Fig. 1 is an exploded view of a shoe, disassembled in its various elements, for the manufacture of which the present method is suggested.
- In particular, a
vamp 2, the sole 4 and adap interconnecting element 3 between vamp and sole are illustrated. - The
vamp 2 has been obtained in accordance with known processes, from leather or other materials commonly used in the manufacture of shoes, and its bottom is open. - The open bottom of the
vamp 2 allows to carry out, in an extremely simple way, the seaming of parts (toe cap) for upper closing of the vamp, if necessary crimped by means of a last. - In accordance with the present method, the interconnecting element consists of a
strip 3, profiled in such a way that it may be seamed along itslongitudinal border 13 to thelower border 2a of the vamp, while the oppositelongitudinal border 23 may be fitted into acorresponding seating 5, provided perimetrically along the border of the sole 4, and turned upwards. - The
longitudinal border 13 of thestrip 3 may be also glued, according to a different way of performing the method, to thelower border 2a of the vamp, thus equally achieving the same desired result. - The
seating 5, along the border of the sole 4, is directly obtained by pressing the sole, and it may have different profiles, conforming with the section of the lowerlongitudinal border 23 of thestrip 3. - The
lower border 13 of thestrip 3 is made flat, while theseating 5 and theborder 23, complementary with thestrip 3, may of course have the shape which every time is considered to be most convenient. - Figs. 2a,2b,2c,2d,2e,2f,2g,2h,2i,2j are views of various embodiments of the
lower border 23, of thestrip 3, and of theseating 5 provided along the border of the sole 4, as well as of their mutual jointing. - The numerals designating the
strip 3 and theseating 5 remain the same in all the figures, with the addition of a letter corresponding to the letter referring to the figure concerned. - With particular reference to Fig.2a, the
strip 3a has itslower border 23a with acusp section 6a; the border withcusp section 6a may be made integrally with thestrip 3a or it may be fastened to it subsequently. Thestrip 3a is then seamed with theupper border 13a to thelower border 2a of thevamp 2. - The
seam 8a is made by machines of known type (not illustrated) or, as it has been said above, it may be replaced by a glueing. - The border of the sole 4a, shown in sectional view in fig. 2a, bears the
seating 5a to receive theborder 23a with cusp section, made complementarily to this latter. - The lower border of the
strip 3a is inserted by pressure in theseating 5a and remains locked therein by the narrowing 7a which results to be above the cusp section of theborder 23a. - Therefore, as it may be seen from fig. 2b, a
second seam 9a stabilizes the fastening between vamp and sole, joining these latter through thestrip 3a interposed between them. - At this point the shoe may be considered as finished, or it may be finished-off further.
- For instance, an insole may be applied on the bottom of the sole, when this latter has not been made so as to present a surface which may be considered finished.
- It should be readily apparent from the foregoing, and as will be hereinafter more fully explained, that the
strip vamp 2 with itsborder border 2a of the vamp, though remaining hidden, after joining of the vamp to the sole, by the border of the latter. - In fig. 2c are shown the sole 4c and the
vamp 2 already joined together according to an embodiment of the present invention which specifically provides for the manufacture of thestrip 3c and of its lower border 23c withcusp section 6c, integrated in a single body. - A further embodiment shown in fig. 2d provides for the addition of a
tape 11 on the outer side of the shoe, partially inserted between the sole 4d and thevamp 2 and folded on itself to make up an ornamental pattern. - The embodiment shown in fig. 2e provides for preparing the
strip 3e folded at right angle and with thelower border 23e having asemi-cusp section 6e. - The
strip 3e is seamed or glued to thelower border 2e of thevamp 2 with the shaped border extending horizontally towards the inside of the vamp. - Subsequently, the
lower border 2e of thevamp 2 is folded outwards and the shapedborder 23e of thestrip 3e is inserted in the complementary seating 5e opportunely provided perimetrically on theflat border 4b of the sole 4e. - Finally, a
seam 9e is made, which concerns the foldedborder 2e of thevamp 2 and theflat border 4b of the sole 4e, thus fixing the fastening between them. - Fig. 2f illustrates a further embodiment of the method suggested by the invention.
- In this case, the
strip 3f, besides the lowernarrow border 23f shaped like a semi-cusp 6f, presents a laterallongitudinal border 33 perpendicular to the same strip. Thestrip 3f is seamed or glued to thelower border 2f of thevamp 2, with the lateralnarrow border 33 extending towards the outside of the vamp. - Then the shaped
narrow border 23f of thestrip 3f is fitted into theseating 5f provided perimetrically along the outer border of the sole 4f. - Furthermore, the sole presents a
perimetrical notch 12 made along its outer lateral border. Thenotch 12 may also be provided on the lower surface of the sole, close to its lower perimetrical edge. - The
seam 9f is made between the sole, in particular inside thenotch 12, and the lateralnarrow border 33 of thestrip 3f. - In this case the
strip 3f serves as an interconnecting element not temporarily, but permanently. - Another interesting embodiment is shown in fig. 2g, wherein with the
strip 3g, instead of the shaped narrow border, is integral along one of its sides a profiledrim 14, e.g. having a rhomboidal section. - The free side of the
strip 3g is fastened to thecorresponding border 2g of thevamp 2, in such a way that therim 14 is turned towards the inside of the same. - Subsequently a pre-sole 15g is prepared, which may me made of rubber or leather of suitable thickness.
- In this case, the
seating 5g is provided on the outer lateral border of the pre-sole 15g, of course with a section complementary to the section of therim 14. - The
lower border 2g of thevamp 2 is positioned so as to wrap the outer border of the pre-sole 15g, with therim 14 fitted into thecorresponding seating 5g. - Therefore the whole unit is inserted into the recess provided in the upper part of a sole 4g, prepared in advance, and the seam 9g is made between the upper external border of the sole 4g, and the
vamp 2, as shown in fig. 2h. - It may also be provided for the application of an
insole 10 on the sole (illustrated by a dotted line in fig. 2h) which may be affected by the seaming. - Otherwise, as shown in fig. 2i, the unit comprising the
vamp 2, thestrip 3g and the pre-sole 15g, may be inserted with its lower part into a suitable mold (not illustrated because it is a part of equipment well known to the experts in the field) prepared for the purpose, into which is then injected the material to make the sole 4i. - Thus all seams are avoided, though obtaining a permanent joining of the sole, pre-sole and vamp.
- In any case, the sole may be formed by injection around the bottom of a vamp already joined to a pre-sole by fixing in and seaming, as shown in fig. 2j.
- In this example, the
strip 3j has anarrow border 23j shaped like a semi-cusp 6j, while the pre-sole 15j bears a step made perimetrically along its whole border. - Corresponding to the internal angle of the step there is provided the
seating 5j designed to receive the shapednarrow border 23j of thestrip 3j. - The
strip 3j is then fastened to thelower border 2j of thevamp 2, with this latter folded internally upwards, so as to remain with theflat border 13j comprised between the same vamp and the fold. - The
first seam 8j is then made between thestrip 3j and thevamp 2. - The lower
narrow border 2j of the vamp, with thestrip 3j seamed to it, is then folded outwards, in such a way that thestrip 3j remains horizontally oriented with the shaped narrow border turned to the inside. - The joining between vamp and pre-sole is performed firstly by inserting the
narrow border 23j shaped like a semi-cusp 6j into thecorresponding seating 5j provided along the border of the pre-sole 15j, and subsequently by the seaming 9j of the border of the sole 4j, corresponding to the step, and of the foldedborder 2j of the vamp. - Finally, the lower part of the unit is inserted into the special mold opportunely prepared, and material is injected to obtain the sole 4j already fastened to the
vamp 2 and to the pre-sole 15j. - The
strip 3a,c,e,f,g,j, in all its various forms described above, as well as in other forms which may be derived from those described heretofore, may be made of synthetic resin or of synthetic cloth, in a single body or in various parts longitudinally joined together. - On said strip some catch projections may be provided, e.g. obtained by
small pins 16, which are then to be coupled with correspondingholes 17 made in suitable positions on the border of thevamp 2, as shown in fig. 3 and, in section, in fig. 3a. - In the same way, catch projections may be provided on the vamp border, e.g. obtained through
small projections 18 which are to be coupled withcorresponding notches 19 made on thestrip 3. - These catch projections allow an easy and homogeneous coupling between strip and vamp.
- Thus all shoes are made the same way and are equal to each other.
- This is also due to the fact that the perimeter of the lower border of the vamp remains necessarily unvaried in length, which is, in particular, equal to the length of the
strip 3. - Thus the leather making up the vamp is not subjected to any drawing or stretching, therefore the shoe remains softer.
