2 Claims.

This invention relates to sound producing toys and more particularly to a toy or device which is adapted to be mounted on the bottom of a shoe.

An object of this invention is to provide a sound producing means which can be removably mounted on the bottom of a shoe so as to produce a clapping sound. as a person walks along.

Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this kind which is adapted to be used during carnival season or the like for the production of a clapping noise which is so constructed that it can be readily and cheaply manufactured and can be mounted on a shoe without injury to the shoe.

The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention mounted on a shoe which is shown in dotted lines.

Figure 3 is a detail bottom plan view of the device partly broken away.

Referring to the drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter S designates generally a shoe of conventional construction having a sole 10 and a heel 11. An elongated fiat plate, generally designated as 12, which is provided with a configuration similar to the bottom of the shoe 10, is adapted to be mounted on the bottom of the shoe, and this plate 12 is provided with a front sole engaging portion 14 and heel engaging portion 15, which is connected with the sole engaging portion by means of a reduced connecting portion 16. This fixed plate or clapper member 12 is provided with a pair of spaced slots 13 through which a securing strap 17 is mounted, and this strap 1'7 engages over the shoe S so as to tighten the fixed clapper 12 on the bottom of the shoe.

In order to prevent movement of the fixed clapper member 12 on the bottom of the shoe, the heel portion is provided with opposed lug members 18 engaging on opposite sides of the heel 11 and with an end lug 19 engaging against the end of the heel. In initial form these lugs 18 and 19 are stamped from the same sheet of metal as the fixed clapper plate member 12, and are then bent up in substantially vertical form about 1932, Serial No. 628,428

the sides and end of the heel 11. A movable clapper 20 is disposed beneath the front or clapper portion 14, and this movable clapper 20 is secured to the fixed clapper 14 by means of rivets 21 or the like.

In order to space the movable clapper 20 away from the bottom of the fixed clapper 12 and also to hold the front portion 14 against lateral movement, there is provided an elongated strip or bar 22 which extends at each end thereof beyond the marginal edge portions of the fixed clapper plate member 14, and these extended end portions 23 are adapted to be bent upwardly so as to engage the sole 1%) of the shoe adjacent the rear portion of the sole. This bar or spacer member 22 is interposed between the fixed clapper 14 and. the movable clapper 20 and the rivets 21 pass therethrough.

While the movable clapper is shown as riveted to the fixed clapper 14 by means of the rivets 21, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction as, if desired, this movable clapper may be secured by other means so that it will not interfere with the walking of the wearer, but at the same time will produce a clapping sound by the movable plate 20 striking the fixed plate 14. v

In the use of this device, the fixed plate member 12 and the movable member 14 are adapted to be stamped out of a sheet of metal of desired thickness and resiliency of, if desired, may be constructed of other material .than metal. The lugs 18 and 19 together with the lugs 23 may be bent upwardly so that they will engage the heel and sole respectively of the shoe and the securing strap 17 extended about the upper portion of the shoe so that the fixed plate will be securely held against movement.

As shown in Figure 1, this strap member 17 is mounted on a forward inclination or angle so that this strap will draw the plate member 12 forwardly and constantly urge the rear lug 19 against the rear of the heel 11.

It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.

What is claimed is:

l. A toy as described comprising a fixed clapper member adapted to engage the bottom of a shoe and having a configuration similar to the configuration of the sole and heel of the shoe.

lugs carried by the member at each side thereof for engagement with the sides of the heel of the shoe, a rear lug carried by the rear of the member and engaging the rear of the heel, a securing strap carried by the member and adapted to engage about the shoe, said securing strap when mounted about the shoe being disposed in forwardly inclined position whereby to tighten the rear lug against the rear of the shoe, a movable clapper member, means for securing the movable clapper member to the fixed member for move= ment, and a bar interposed between the movable member and the fixed member and having outstanding end portions constituting lugs for em gagement with the sole of the shoe to hold the forward portion of the fixed member against lateral movement relative to the shoe, said bar also acting to space the'movable member away from the fixed member.

2. A toy comprising a plate member, means for removably attaching the plate member on the bottom of a shoe, a second plate member normally disposed in spaced relation to the first plate being disposed at one end of said second plate.
