This invention relates to footwear of the sandal type adapted to be worn either with or without a shoe and for various purposes.
When the present sandal is worn with a shoe, it may serve to insulate the shoe from damp or cold floors and to prevent slipping of the wearer on slippery surfaces, etc. When the present sandal is worn without a shoe, it will provide a serviceable sandal for beach wear, home use and the like.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a sandal of the above kind which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise admirably suited for a successful commercial use.
The present invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described,'shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a side elevational view of a sandal constructed in accordance with the present invention and applied to a shoe.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the sandal detachedfrom the shoe; and
Figure 3 is a, fragmentary horizontal section taken on the plane of line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the illustrated embodiment of the present invention includes an outer sole member, and means to detachably secure said outer sole member against the sole of a shoe or the sole of the foot.
The outer sole member is composed of a frame 5 in the form or shape of an outer sole having heel and shank portions, and consisting of an elongated strip of rubberized fabric having its ends terminating in spaced relation at the heel end of said outer sole member. Arranged be tween the sides of the frame 5 and spaced from' each other as well as from the sides of said frame 6 are a plurality of intermediate longitudinal strips 6, also of rubberized fabric. Extending transversely through all of the strips 6 and the sides of the frame 5 are the parallel legs of a plurality of U-shaped wire members i which are Spaced apart longitudinally of the outer sole member. The strips 6 and the sides of the frame I! are provided with longitudinal series of openings through which the legs of the wire members I pass. In order to give the frame 5 and the strips 6 the desired shape of a sole and to maintain it in' this shape suitable spacing washers 8 are placed in plurality on the legs of wire memhers I between the spaced opposed portions of the strips 8 and between saidstrips .6 and the adjacent side members of the frame 5, the ends of the wire members 'i being clinched so as to maintain the strips, the washers, and the sides of the frame 5 in compact relation.
Upon properly placing the strips and washers upon the legs of the wire members 1 and passing the latter through the sides of the frame 5 as above described-the assembly is tightly secured to maintain the strips, washers and sides of frame'B in contiguous relation, by bending the projecting free ends of the wire members 1 toward each other to a position wherein they are alined'and disposed parallel with the adjacent portions of the adjacent side of the frame 5.
- These bent ends of each of the wire members I latter. This leaves the reinforcing fabric of the strips exposed at the upper and lower edges thereof, said strips being vertically disposed, thereby affording anti-slipping engaging surfaces both at the top and bottom of the outer sole member of the present device. A very tough and durable outer sole member is thus had, the construction and assembly of the parts of which may be conveniently accomplished.
Where desired, the outer sole member may be provided with a heel counter ill consisting oi a relatively wide and thin strip of rubberized fab-' ric secured around the heel portion of the outer sole member proper.
Any suitable means may be provided for detachably securing the outer sole member against the sole of a shoe or against the sole of the foot. The means shown consists of 'a pair of straps II and I2 attached at corresponding ends to opposite sides of the heel portion of the outer sole member as at lid and Ila and preferably by connection with the connected ends and intermediate portion of the adjacent wire member 1, respectively. The straps I I and l 2 extend upwardly and rearwardly where they cross each other and are preferably secured together as at la, the strap l I being relatively long so as to extend around one side of the foot or shoe and then across the latter at the instep, then under the connected ends of the wire member I at the toe end of the outer sole member, then upwardly over the toe portion of the shoe or last-named wire member 1, and finally rearwardly to the strap I! which extends around the other side of the shoe or foot and is provided with a buckle I l for detachably connecting the ends of said straps Ii and If. This provides a simple and inexpensive means for effectively se-,
curing the outer sole member on the foot or shoe and for permitting quick application or detachment of the sandal. when the sandal is to be removed, the free endof strap ii is disengaged from buckle l4 and slack is taken in the portion of strap Ii which passes over the toe portion of the shoe or foot. I
It will thus be seen that we have provided a very, durable and serviceable sandal of the type described which. may be economically manufactured and which is decidedly efflcient for the intended purposes and uses.
What we claim as new is:
1. A sandal of the character described including an outer sole member having heel and shank portions, and means to detachably. secure said outer sole member against the sole of a shoe or the sole of the foot, said outer sole member com-- prising a frame composed of a strip of rubberized fabric arranged on edge and shaped to conform to the outline of a sole, a plurality of strips of rubberized fabric arranged longitudinally within said frame and spaced from each other at the sides of the frame, a plurality of U-shaped wire members passing through the sides of said frame and said longitudinal strips, and a plurality of washers arranged on the legs of said wire members between said strips and the sides of said frame to maintain them in spaced relation, the ends of said wire members being directed toward each other and connected together to secure the frame, strips and washers in assembled relation.
'2. A sandal of the character described comprising an outer sole member, and means to detachably secure said outer sole member against the sole of a shoe or the sole of the foot, said outer sole member including a frame substantially in the form or shape of an outer sole having heel and shank portions and consisting of an elongated strip of rubberized fabric, a plurality of intermediate strips of rubberized fabric arranged between the sides of and extending longitudinally of said frame, spacers arranged between said strips and between the sides of said frame and said strips, and means securing the frame, longitudinal strips and spacers in assembled relation.
3. A sandal of the character described including an outer sole member having heel and shank portions, and means to detachably secure said outer sole member against the sole of a shoe or the sole of the foot, said outer sole member comprising a frame composed of a strip of rubberized fabric arranged on edge and shaped to conform to the outline of a sole, a plurality of strips of rubberized fabric arranged longitudinally within said frame and spaced from each other at the sides of the frame, a plurality of U-shaped wire members passing through the sides of said frame and said longitudinal strips, and a plurality of washers arranged on the legs of said wire members between said strips and the sides of said frame to maintain them in spaced relation, the ends of said wire members being directed toward each other and connected together to secure the frame, strips and washers in assembled relation, said means to detachably secure the outer' sole member to the shoe or foot comprising a pair of straps attached at corresponding ends to opposite sides of the heel portion of said outer sole member by connection with the connected ends and intermediate portion of one of said wire members. 4.. A sandal of the character described including an outer sole member having heel and shank portions, and means to detachably secure said outer sole member against the sole of a shoe or the sole of the foot, said outer sole member comprising a frame composed of a strip of rubberized fabric arranged on edge and shaped to conform to the outline of a sole, a plurality of strips of rubberized fabric arranged longitudinally within said frame and spaced from each other at the sides of the frame, a plurality of U-shaped wire members passing through the sides of said frame and said longitudinal strips, and a plurality of washers arranged on the legs of said wire members between said strips and the sides of said frame to maintain them in spaced relation, the ends of said wire members being directed toward each other and connected together to secure the frame, strips and washers in assembled relation, said means to detachably secure the outer sole member to the shoe or foot comprising a pair of straps attached at corresponding ends to opposite sides of the heel portion of said outer sole member by connection with the connected ends and intermediate portion of one of said wire members, one of said straps being extended forwardly and. under the intermediate portion and connected ends of another of said wire members at the toe end .of said outer sole member to provide a loop adapted to pass over the toe of the shoe or foot.
