end I1 passing forward toward the toe. The i ends pass each other in opposite directions between the upper sole I5 and the lower sole I8 which conceals the thongs 4 between the upper and lower soles.

By the construction just described the thongs 4 may be laced in and out through the `lower row of apertures I2 and the apertures I4 in the upper sole I5 continuously along one side of the sole and upper around the toe and along the other side to the point `9 and the thongs may yield to permit movement between the upper and the sole thereby adjusting the upper automatically to the footof `the wearer and at the same time alfording ample ventilation to the foot.

Ihe portion I9 of the upper not secured to the sole near and around the heel provides a separate` adjustment and freedom around the heel of the 1 foot. `The upper sole and lower sole may be `secured to each other by the stitching 2li or otherwise.

In the modifications shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7` I have shown the thongs 4 connecting the upper I` to the sole 2 in other ways than hereinbefore described. In Figures 5 and 6 the thongs 1 4 are shown as formed integral with theupper I and the ends` are carried under the inner sole 2I to which they may be se- I cured. In Figure 7 the thongs 4 are shown as being laced through the apertures I2 and held to thesole by being secured to the inner sole or between the insole and the sole 2. In either caseas in the construction shown in Figures 1 and 2 inclusive the space 3 between the sole and upper is bridged by the thongs.

I have herein shown and described the construction of my shoe in detail and it is obvious after this disclosure to one skilled in thel making of shoes that numerous modications of my invention are apparent to suit the various conditions to which it is adapted in the manufacture of shoes. I therefore do not wish toA be limited to the details herein disclosed as I may wish to depart therefrom within the scope of the appended claims which set forth my invention.

I claim:

l. In a shoe, an upper having apertures along its lower edge and a, sole apertured along its edge separated from said upper by a space, and

a thong laced across said space to secure said upper to the sole, the end of said thong passing from an aperture in the sole below upwardly and inwardly through an aperture in the upper then downwardly and outwardly forming a loop over said thong and inwardly and npforming a loop over said thong and inwardly and upwardly through another aperture in said upper then outwardly and downwardly through said loop and crossing said thong and into the next aperture in said sole, 'a lower sole, the ends of the thong passing in opposite directions between said sole and said lower sole and extending upwardly through said sole and through adjacent apertures in said upper thereby extending said lacing for a substantial distance l0 around the edges of said upper and sole.
