Description

Patented Oct. 14, 1 941 l UNITED sTATEs PATENT AOFFICE' SANDAL noden M. smith, mamma might, no., nsignor to Foot-Sadi. Inc., a corporation o! Missouri Application February I, 1.939, Serial No. 253,982
This invention relates to sandals. The object of this invention isv to provide a sandal which will be simple in construction, economical to manufacture, durable inservice, pleasing in appearance, and comfortableto the wearer.
portion of the sandal; and
Fig. 'I is a plan viewjof a quarter member.
The sandal includes generally three parts, a bottom I,a foot strap 2 and rear quarter members 3 and 4. The bottom l has an outsole' 5 and an insole G; preferably of the same conguration, secured together about their periphery, by a line of stitches 1. A middle or cushion sole I is of less extent than the sole pattern and of such configuration as to lie wholly lwithin the seam 1. The middle sole 2 is spaced above the outsole 5. by means of sectional members 9, ll
and l I., of such form as to provide through open-f ings between the middle sole and outsole, as well as between the insole and outsole, for the insertion of a strap 2.
The .outsole and 'insole are preferably constructed of leather, the middle sole of soft rubber or of sponge rubber. and the spacing meinbers of fiber composition. It will be understood.
however, that other and substitute materials may be used. It is preferable. however.'to have the middle soie of soft resilient material. although in some aspects of this invention` the middle sol'e may be dispensed with entirely.
A heel l2 may be attached by nails ll. The' heel may be of leather, rubbenwood. composition or any other convenient material and atl tachedmanyconvenientmannennonoveltybeingelaimedintheheelroritsmannerofattach- 1 calm. (ci. 3641.5)
The quarter members 3 and l, clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 7, each has serrated lower edges formed with prongs or tongues M by slots l and being skived to a thin edge. The prongs I4 extend through slots I6 in the insolei and outwardly between the insole and outsole so as to be caught by the seam 1. The slots l5 are preferabiy enlarged at their inner end as shown at l1, Fig. '1, so as to engage edges il of the slots I6 in the insole.
, -It willibe understood that the quarter members 2 and 4 are alike except that the member I carries a buckle l! while the outer end of the quarter I has an elongated strap with holes to be caught by a tongue ofthe buckle I9.
The quarters 3 and each have slots 20 to pass Athe strap 2 In the preferred construction a single strap 2 is used. It has a loop 2| extending between the middle sole and outsole at the ball thereof, a pair of loops 22 extending over the forepart of 'the foot when inserted in the sandal, a pair of loops 23 -extending between the middle sole and outsole at the instep and a loop 2l extending through the slots 20 of the quarters 3 25 and 4 vma about the heel. The ends of the strap may be fastened by a buckle 25 at the ankle.
The-strap 2 in passing through the insole in- 'side the seam 1 passes through slots 2i of novel i construction. As best shown in Fig. 5, the slots. 3o 2i are each formed by a generally longitudinal slit 21 and lateral slits 2l to form tongues 29. Aashowninthe drawings, theslits maybe circular punches but sumcient to form a well defined tongue 29 which lios under and against the strap to form a well finished structure.
It willbe obvious that various changes may `be made in the details of construction. within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of this invention, and that parts 4o of the invention may without the whole.
