1 Claim.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a sandal.

More particularly, the invention proposes an improved sandal which has a new and improved vamp.

It is contemplated to characterize the new vamp by a top layer embossed with an ornamental design and having slots spaced inwards from its sides. It is proposed that a bottom layer be attached along its edges to said top layer. A plurality of straps engage through said slots for attachment or connection with the sole of said sandal. V

The invention contemplates modifications, one of which has the straps formed of sections connected by elastic portions.

Another object of the invention is the construction of an article as mentioned which is simple and durable and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the ap pended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a top perspective view of a sandal constructed in accordance with this invention;

Fig. 2. is a side perspective view of the sandal. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side view of the sandal to show some of the details.

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view of the sole of the sandal, and one of the straps.

Fig. 5 is a plan view of the vamp portion of the sandal illustrated, per se.

Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.

Fig. 7 is a plan view of the vamp of a sandal embodying another form of this invention.

Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the straps used in Fig. 7.

The new and improved sandal, in accordance with this invention, includes a vamp portion consisting of a top layer ID, a bottom layer H, and several straps l2 by which these layers are attached to the sole l3 of the sandal. layer [0 is embossed with an ornamental design. It is provided with slots I4 spaced inwards from its side edges. The straps l2 are engaged through the slots I4 so that the end portions of the straps extend from said slots, and the central portions The top of the straps are disposed between the top and bottom layers l0 and II, respectively. The layers In and II are secured together along their side edges by stitches IS.

The sole I3 of the sandal connects with a usual heel portion l6. This heel portion [6 is provided with a heel strap l8 extending from one side of the heel to the other for extending behind the heel of a wearer.

A strap 20 is connected across the side portions of the heel strap 18 for engaging over ones foot. This strap 20 is formed from two end sections, namely, an end section 2| and. an end section 22. These end sections are connected together by a buckle 23. The end section 2| is laced through the top two openings Id of said top layer 10. The outer ends of the strap 20 are each provided with a pair of slots 24 through which the heel strap I8 passes. The ends of the straps I2 are permanently attached to the sole l3 by a line of stitches 25 (see Fig. 4).

In Figs. 7 and 8 a modified form of the invention is disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that straps 30, which are passed through the slots M of the top layer 10, are each formed from a, pair of end sections 31 and 32 which are connected together by a central elastic section 33. The inner ends of the end sections 3! and 32 have transverse enlarged heads 34 which are larger than the slots l4 so as to act as stops for preventing overstretching of the elastics 33. The elastic straps 33 are hidden from view between the layers l0 and II of the vamp. The sections 3|, 33 and 32 are secured together by lines of stitches 35.

In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the previous form and like parts are identified by like reference numerals.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
