Description

March 30, 1948,. R. A. LEACH a-r AL 2,438,711
SHOE WITH DETACHABLE UPPER I Filed March 2, 1945 Even for Patented Mar. 30, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHOE WITH DETACHABLE UPPER Raymond A. Leach and Geraldine M. Leach, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application March 2, 1945, Serial No. 580,522
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to shoes particularly to that type used by women, but also for mens shoes.
The main object is to provide a shoe of construction and design so that varied uppers can be provided on a common foundation to suit the tastes and colors of the wearer.
Another object is to provide a shoe with a foundation portion of standard construction such as the high heel, oxford, slipper, wedge sole, or all other types with means for quick assembly therewith of an upper portion which is provided in various colors and materials.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shoe with a foundation portion provided for attaching the upper portion through loop and string, clips and hooks or other means.
A further object is to provide womens shoes of a type whereby a foundation portion can be bought with one or more upper portions in color and design to suit the tastes of the wearer and to provide means for the lady to make a change of color in her shoes to match the colors of her other wearing apparel when so desired without purchasing several pairs of shoes.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description progresses and in which reference to the accompanying drawings may be had and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of our invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of an upper portion of the shoe shown in full developed position.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the foundation.
In the drawings like parts are designated by like numerals. I is a sole portion having built thereon the loops or clips II and the toe box l2 and the counter l3. The shoe upper portion I4 is provided with loops or clips I5 coacting with the corresponding loops ll of the foundation as best shown in Fig. 1. The assembly cord is is threaded through the loops H and loops l5 causing the upper portion M to be assembled in fixed position to the foundation Ill. The upper portion I4 is provided with lacing eyelets l'l-l'| through which the cord I6 is threaded to hold the units of the shoe in complete assembly. By thus using a single lacing cord as a draw string which extends both through the interengaging series of loops II and i5 and the cooperating rows of eyelets I I a quickly operable satisfactory take-up fastening means is provided which compensates for wear and may be utilized to keep the shoe snugly fitted to the foot at all times.
It is to be understood that others versed in the art may make modifications and changes but such changes and modifications are to be embodiments of this invention within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is:
A shoe comprising a sole and heel tread-forming portion, a toe box fixed on the forepart of said tread-forming portion, a heel counter fixed upon the rear part of the tread-forming portion, a flexible upper adapted to be received about said toe box and heel counter and to enclose the foot of the wearer therein, the end portions of said upper having their transverse edges disposed to assume spaced apart parallel positions at the rear of the heel counter and having rows of openings adjacent said transverse edges, coacting loops formed on the bottom longitudinal edge of said cover and the upper perimeter of the treadforming portion, and a lacing element adapted to be laced through said coacting loops and the respective rows of openings in the end of said upper to detachably connect the cover with the tread-forming portion and adjustably connect the ends of the upper for maintaining the upper in smoothly drawn condition upon the toe box,
the heel counter, and the foot of the wearer.
