SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,273, dated June 6, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. HOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cue Tips; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a to part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to an improvement in securing the leather tips to billiard-cues, and has for its objects to provide such a fastening for the tips as will prevent them from becoming 2o loose or displaced from the cue-sticks, as is the casein cues of the ordinary construction, often causing great annoyance to players; and a further object is to provide such a means of fastening the leathers to the stick that should 2 5 the tip become worn to such a degree as to become useless, it can be readily replaced with another without the necessity of sending the cue or cues away from the billiard-room. These objects I attain by the construction sub- 0 stantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a cue-stick, to the small end of which is fitted a ferrule, B, by screws to or other suitable means, passing through a plate, b, formed with the ferrule below its upper rim, this said plate being of sufficient distance below the upper rim to form a recess, C, in which fits a disk, D, provided upon its under side with a 0 fiat-faced pin, E, which enters a hole, 0, in the center of the plate I), and is prevented from turning by means of screws F passing through the side of the ferrule and binding against the pin. Said screws come flush with-or drop 4 5 below the outer surface of the ferrule, so as to give an even surface to the cue.

To the top of the disk D is secured a flat piece of leather, G, by means of small points (No model.)

or pins 6, of metal, entering the leather from the upper side of the disk and firmly clinched into said leather. To this fiat piece of leather is glued the upper piece of leather, H, being the tip proper, made slightly rounding or beveled upon its-rim. Should the tip be knocked off from the flat leather upon the disk, the points 5 5 or pins holding the leather upon the disk will not do injury to the billiard-balls, as they are firmly clinched down into the leather.

The ferrule, being of the form shown, comes flush with the cue-stick over which it is fitted, thus making the one as smooth and easily haudled as though there were no ferrule thereon.

It will be readily seen that should the leather tip become loose or lost entirely from the cue the disk and fiat piece of leather to which the tip is fastened may be readily removed by loosening the screw or screws in the side of the ferrule and a new one substituted, thus admitting of the cues being kept in order without the necessity of frequently sending them out to be retipped, as is often the case with proprietors of large billiard-rooms using cues of the ordinary construction, it being necessary to keep on hand a larger number of cues than are actually needed to replace and prevent annoyance from imperfect ones.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- An attachment for billiard-cues, consisting of the ferrule B, formed with a plate, I), and recess C, and provided with one or more fastening-screws, F, in combination with the disk I), having the flat-faced pin E, and the fiat piece of leather G, clinched upon the disk by points or pins 0, said flat leather having glued thereto the tip H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
